The little train of Artouste

High mountains accessible to all.

A brief history of the Petit Train d’Artouste

In 1924, the Compagnie des Chemins de Fer du Midi built a dam at high altitude to connect several lakes via a network of canals.

A train was specially designed to transport men and equipment to the construction site, which took eight years to complete.

Once the work was completed, the tourist train was operated by the Conseil Général des Pyrénées-Atlantiques, then by the SNCF, and finally, for the last few years, by ALTI SERVICE.

The Sagette cable car takes you to the train station, where you can board the train in its small open-air cabins and travel to Lake Artouste and several high-altitude hiking trails in spectacular surroundings.

The Artouste Miniature Train

The Artouste Mini Train is the highest train in Europe. Sitting in the open-air train, you will travel along the mountainside for a spectacular view at an altitude of 2,000 metres. Shortly after departure, you will pass through the dark, 314-metre-long Bear Tunnel, emerging into unspoilt nature. This is the real mountains. Keep your eyes peeled for the landscapes, flora and fauna. The train journey takes 50 minutes each way.

Once you arrive at the station, allow around ten minutes to reach Lake Artouste.
