The Gave d’Ossau

A gave is a torrent or river in the Pyrenees. The Gave du Brousset and the Gave de Bious, on either side of the Pic du Midi d’Ossau, join to form the Gave d’Ossau, which plunges down into the valley for over 48 km. It joins the Gave d’Aspe at Oloron-Sainte-Marie to form the Gave d’Oloron.

In the upper reaches, the Gave d’Ossau and its tributaries form steep-sided torrents with an average width of no more than 10 metres. Access is difficult, but from Laruns and Béost it becomes easier via the D934 road which runs alongside the river.

From Arudy, in the heart of the Bager forest, the river becomes wild. With an average width of 25 metres, this section of the river is difficult to access. It is best to take a 1:25,000 IGN map (available at reception) if you wish to venture there.

This section of the river has a very large population of young salmon, which must be released.

Brown trout is the most common species found along the entire length of the Osau river.
